Michigan State football welcomed a strong freshman class this offseason as the program looks to establish itself as a recruiting powerhouse under Jonathan Smith’s leadership.
Several 2025 signees have already participated in spring practices, giving them a jump start on learning the playbook and competing with their new teammates.
One standout early on has been freshman defensive back Aydan West, a three-star recruit from Gaithersburg, Maryland. Veteran defensive back Malik Spencer had high praise for him: “I like Aydan a lot. For a young guy, he’s very mature. He’s definitely ready to come in and contribute.”
On the offensive side, the Spartans have added promising talent at wide receiver, including three-star recruits Braylon Collier and Charles Taplin. Rising sophomore Nick Marsh, who was in their position last year, has taken Collier under his wing, offering tips from his own freshman experience.
“Just making sure Braylon gets the playbook down, stays comfortable, and has everything he needs,” Marsh explained. “I’m sharing what worked for me last year, helping him with the same things that helped me succeed.”
Veteran wide receiver Alante Brown was also impressed with Taplin, who comes from Red Oak, Texas, where he was also a track star. “He can run,” Brown said with a smile.
“He’s tall, fast, and has great hands. He’s a young guy, though, so he’s still learning the mental side and refining his technique. Coach Hawk has done a great job getting him ready for the next level. His speed is definitely turning heads.”
The Spartans signed just one quarterback for the 2025 class: Leo Hannan, a three-star prospect from Anaheim, California. Offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren shared a brief update on Hannan: “Leo is still young and learning, but he’s had some good reps when he’s been in there.”
More freshmen will join the team during training camp, but so far, the players mentioned above have certainly made an impression during spring practice.
