Gophers Shows Interest in Big Ten Top Shooter

Tre Holloman, a highly regarded guard entering his senior year, is currently in the transfer portal, but rumors suggest that the Minnesota Gophers, from his home state, aren’t particularly enthusiastic about recruiting him.

According to Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press, the ex-Cretin-Derham Hall star, who played the last three seasons at Michigan State before opting to transfer, has only garnered mild interest from the Gophers.

On the other hand, Pete Nakos, a college basketball recruiting insider, reported on Tuesday that Holloman has lined up visits with Baylor, North Carolina, NC State, and Villanova.

Tre Holloman, who posted an average of 9.1 points per game and served as a team captain at Michigan State this season, was a standout high school player at Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul. During his senior year in high school, he averaged an impressive 18.8 points, 10.4 assists, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.3 steals per game, earning him a spot among the nation’s top-100 recruits.

In 2022, Holloman was named Minnesota’s Gatorade Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Minnesota Mr. Basketball award, which ultimately went to Braedon Carrington, a former Golden Gopher guard from Park Center High School in the Twin Cities.

The Minnesota Gophers’ apparent lack of strong pursuit of Holloman might stem from head coach Niko Medved’s strategy to build a roster with long-term potential. On Monday’s Jim Rome Show, Medved noted, “We had ten seniors on the roster last year, so we’ve got a lot of work to do immediately in the transfer portal. This year is really about transitioning to a more balanced roster with guys we can develop—mixing older and younger players, hopefully ones we can retain to build something sustainable. It’s going to be a challenge with so many new faces.”

If the season were to start today, true sophomore Isaac Asuma would likely take the starting point guard role, joined in the lineup by transfer portal additions Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, B.J. Omot, and Bobby Durkin.
