Excitingly, reinforcements are on the way, with highly anticipated top prospect Andrew Painter set to make his season debut soon. According to Phillies manager Rob Thomson, Painter will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Clearwater on Friday, throwing a couple of innings in his first start. He will pitch once a week over the next few months, with the goal of bringing him up to the majors by mid-to-late summer.
Painter, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery in July 2023, is ranked as the eighth-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. Despite missing much of last season, he impressed in the Arizona Fall League, posting a 2.30 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. During his rehab, he’s added a fastball that reaches near triple digits and a stronger slider, raising expectations for his future.
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has high hopes for Painter, calling him one of the best young pitchers in baseball with the potential to become a No. 1 starter. Although finding room for him in the rotation could be challenging, it’s a problem the team would gladly welcome. If all goes well, Painter could be part of the Phillies’ rotation by the end of the season, contributing to their success as they progress through the summer.
