If you believe in the importance of team visits, it looks like the Denver Broncos are focusing on wide receivers early in the draft. The Broncos have not only hosted Missouri’s Luther Burden III but are also set to welcome Texas’ Matthew Golden for a top 30 visit.
Although this year’s receiver class isn’t particularly strong at the top, Golden and Burden stand out as two of the best four prospects. 9NEWS’ Mike Klis shared details about the Golden visit.
“Other than running back, the Broncos seem to be eyeing wide receivers for their No. 20 pick. They’ve scheduled a 30 visit today with the fast Texas WR Matthew Golden, according to a source. Golden’s been busy visiting teams. After two seasons at Houston, he put up 58 catches for 987 yards and 9 TDs at Texas last year,” Klis wrote on X.
At the NFL Combine, Matthew Golden clocked an impressive 4.29-second 40-yard dash, a time that surprised many since his speed doesn’t always jump out on film. While he clearly has elite straight-line speed, some question his agility. Golden’s stock has soared recently, with certain analysts predicting he could be the first receiver off the board, potentially as early as the No. 12 pick to the Dallas Cowboys.
Golden spent two seasons at Houston before transferring to Texas, where he recorded 58 receptions for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. His best numbers at Houston were 39 catches in 2023 and 584 yards with seven scores in 2022.
In 2024, though, his 61.7 yards per game average raises red flags. Historically, NFL receivers with low college per-game production have struggled to transition successfully. Looking back to 2020, of the 28 wide receivers selected in the first round, Golden’s per-game yardage would rank dead last. Only one other, Henry Ruggs at 62.2 yards per game, was below 75 among that group.
