Gophers Have ‘Strong Interest’ in Mid-American Combo Guard

Western Michigan guard Chancey Willis Jr. is a name Minnesota Gophers fans should keep an eye on in the transfer portal. Jeff Goodman reports that Minnesota is one of several programs pursuing the 6-foot-2 guard.

According to Goodman, citing an agent, Willis — the 2022 Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball — is receiving “strong interest” from Minnesota, South Florida, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.

This past season, Willis posted averages of 16.8 points, 5.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game. In matchups against NCAA tournament-level teams, he scored 13 points versus St. Thomas, 22 against North Dakota State, and 12 against Michigan State.

Willis is just one of several players Minnesota has been linked to in the transfer market this week. The Gophers are also among six finalists for Division II All-American guard Wes Enis, who averaged over 20 points per game this season, and have shown interest in another Division II standout, Jadin Booth, who averaged 21 points at Florida Southern.

Additional transfer targets reportedly connected to Minnesota include Kansas State’s Brendan Hausen and Garry Clark, a forward from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Before playing at Western Michigan, Willis spent the 2023–24 season at Division II Henry Ford College and the year prior at Saginaw Valley State. Since he has only one year of Division I experience, new NCAA guidelines could allow him up to three more years of eligibility at that level.

This flurry of transfer activity comes shortly after Minnesota landed a commitment from San Jose State transfer Robert Vaihola, a 6-foot-8 forward known for his rebounding. Vaihola joins Bobby Durkin, B.J. Omot, and Jaylen Crocker-Johnson as Gopher additions from the portal.
