Notre Dame Football Grieves The Passing of Legend

Eric Penick, a legendary Notre Dame running back and vital member of the 1973 national championship team, has passed away at 71. His iconic 85-yard run against USC in 1973 was instrumental in securing Notre Dame’s ninth national title.

A highly touted recruit, Penick made an immediate impact, amassing 727 rushing yards in 1972, the second-highest single-season total by a Fighting Irish running back at the time.

Despite struggling with injuries during his time at Notre Dame, Penick still stood out enough to be selected by the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

Following his football career, he faced serious health challenges, including a leg amputation due to complications from diabetes and earlier injuries.

Stephen Alexander of Fighting Irish Preview honored Penick’s memory with a heartfelt tribute, which you can read here.

This Easter weekend, our thoughts and prayers are with Penick and his loved ones.
