Lions Cut Ties with Super Talent Ahead of NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions have released quarterback Jake Fromm just one day before the 2025 NFL Draft, bringing their current roster down to 73 players.

Fromm, a fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2020 draft, spent time with the Bills, Giants, and Commanders before joining the Lions during last year’s training camp. Although he adjusted well after coming in mid-camp, he never made it to the active roster.

He signed a Futures contract with Detroit in January, but following the team’s acquisition of Kyle Allen in free agency, the Lions appear confident moving forward with Allen and Hendon Hooker as backups to starting quarterback Jared Goff.

While the timing of Fromm’s release may seem odd, it aligns with the Lions’ current roster strategy under GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell. Their offseason roster is more full than usual—leaving just 17 open spots heading into draft weekend. With seven draft picks, the Lions might only have room to sign around 10 undrafted free agents, their smallest UDFA class in recent memory.

With only three quarterbacks now on the roster, there’s a chance the Lions could add a rookie QB—either through the draft or as an undrafted free agent—to serve as an extra arm in training camp and potentially compete for a backup role.
