Michigan State Top WRs Enter Transfer Portal

Michigan State revamped its wide receiver group during the offseason through the transfer portal.

Austin Clay and Jaylan Brown, both redshirt freshmen, are among the returnees but have decided to explore other options, entering the portal on Tuesday. A program spokesperson confirmed Clay’s entry, while Brown announced it on social media.

Neither Clay nor Brown saw playing time as true freshmen last season. The Spartans concluded their spring practice on Saturday.

The spring portal window, which opened last week, closes this Friday. With Clay and Brown’s departures, they join defensive back Dillon Tatum and EDGE Anthony Jones as the latest Michigan State scholarship players to enter the portal. Defensive back Caleb Coley also entered the portal as a graduate transfer on April 1.

Clay, who stands 6-foot-0 and weighs 170 pounds, was a three-star recruit from Ohio and had originally committed to Bowling Green before flipping to Michigan State in the 2024 class under coach Jonathan Smith. Brown, a 6-1, 192-pound three-star recruit from Texas, also signed with Michigan State’s 2024 class.

Nick Marsh remains Michigan State’s top receiver, and coach Smith has added four experienced veterans to the position through the portal: Omari Kelly (Middle Tennessee State), Chrishon McCray (Akron), Rodney Bullard (Valdosta State), and Evan Boyd (Central Michigan).
