Detroit Lions Invest in Versatile UDFA Keith Cooper Jr. After NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions have built a reputation for uncovering hidden gems both during and after the NFL Draft, consistently working to assemble a championship-caliber roster in pursuit of the franchise’s first Lombardi Trophy.

Despite falling just short of the Super Bowl last season, Detroit enters the 2025 campaign with strong expectations and the fifth-best odds (+950) at FanDuel Sportsbook.

General Manager Brad Holmes remains aggressive in the undrafted free agent market, recently making one of the team’s bigger post-draft signings: Keith Cooper Jr., a versatile defender out of Houston with experience at both linebacker and defensive line.

Per NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Lions signed Cooper with a $20,000 signing bonus and $125,000 in guaranteed money, making it one of their most notable UDFA deals. Cooper was a sought-after prospect, but the Lions landed him—highlighting how much they value his potential.

Over his college career—split between Tulane and Houston—Cooper racked up 119 tackles, 14 sacks, and eight pass deflections, showcasing a mix of power and agility. His athleticism and ability to contribute on special teams make him an intriguing developmental prospect.

Though earning a spot on Detroit’s deep 53-man roster won’t be easy, Cooper’s 6’4″, 259-pound frame and production suggest he could find a role on the practice squad and develop into a contributor by 2026 or 2027.

For now, he represents a low-risk, high-upside addition—exactly the kind of move that has defined the Lions’ recent roster-building success.
