Last summer, Luisangel Acuna joined the Mets as part of the Max Scherzer trade with the Texas Rangers, although the transaction was more intricate. The Mets assumed Scherzer’s salary and continued to cover a significant portion this year.
Acuna, a highly debated prospect among Mets fans, has shown promise but hasn’t yet established a clear path to the majors. Starting at second base or transitioning into a utility role appears to be a viable initial option. His speed is impressive, though his batting skills require further development.
In this latest trade, the Mets have dealt Acuna to the Marlins in exchange for their standout closer, Tanner Scott. It’s a move where a top 100 prospect is traded for a rental reliever. Last year, the Mets received two lesser prospects when they traded David Robertson. The question now is whether the Marlins could fetch more for Scott in subsequent deals.
If the Marlins aim to sweeten the deal, they might consider including one of the players they sent to the Mets last summer. However, to avoid repetition, Marco Vargas and Ronald Hernandez are being reserved for future negotiations.
