Florida Football Fans Fuming: Former QB’s Brutal Comments Rock 2024 Offseason

The Florida football program has been in decline since Dan Mullen’s next-to-last season in Gainesville. After a successful 8-4 record in 2020, Mullen was dismissed just 11 games into the following season, leaving Florida with a 5-6 record. The Gators have struggled to achieve a winning season for the past three years. Despite issues with offensive production, defensive struggles, and poor performance in key games, the SEC team was home to quarterback Anthony Richardson from 2020 to 2022 before he entered the NFL, where he was selected as the fourth overall pick.

Richardson played under Mullen for two seasons and then became the starting quarterback under current coach Billy Napier in 2022. In a recent interview, Richardson revealed that he almost left Florida before Mullen’s exit and, shockingly, he had intended to leave the program after his third season regardless of his draft prospects. This revelation has upset many Gator fans, who have criticized Richardson on social media over the weekend for his perceived lack of loyalty.

Florida Football Fans: Share Displeasure with Anthony Richardson

Earlier this week, a resurfaced podcast clip featuring former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson went viral. In the clip shared by NFL Digest on Twitter and TikTok, Richardson expressed frustration with former head coach Dan Mullen’s management of his playing time. He cited poor oversight and recurring injuries as reasons for his desire to leave Florida after just his second season. Despite transitioning to new head coach Billy Napier, Richardson’s commitment to the program remained lukewarm, and he was prepared to either enter the NFL draft or transfer after the 2022 season.

Florida football fans are fuming over Richardson’s choice of words about the program, especially given the team’s struggles during his tenure. Many took to Twitter (now known as X) to express their anger and disappointment with Richardson’s recent comments.

Richardson: Unpleased with Florida Football

Anthony Richardson is set to enter his second NFL season with the Indianapolis Colts next fall. His rookie year in 2023 was marred by injury, as he missed most of the season due to shoulder surgery. Despite struggles with fumbles, Richardson showed promise as a passer, accumulating 577 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception over seven games. Reflecting on his college career at Florida, Richardson reveals in a resurfaced podcast clip that he nearly left the program twice.

In the clip, Richardson discusses his frustrations with injuries and coaching changes during his time at Florida. “I started pulling my hammies. Never pulled my hammies before. I’m like, ‘Bro, what’s going on?’ They threw me out there to start against Georgia, the number one defense in the country. I left that game early with a concussion and then messed up my knee, needing surgery at the end of the season,” he explains.

He continues, “When we got a new coaching staff in my third year, I told them, ‘Let’s see how this spring goes, but if it isn’t working out, I’m out of here.’ They understood because I would have to learn a new offense and recover from knee surgery, which might affect my mobility. I stuck it out, but by the end of that year, I was set on leaving Florida. Whether I declared for the draft or not, I knew I wasn’t going to be there again.”
