Saahdiq Charles had an opportunity to secure the right guard position for the Tennessee Titans during training camp, but his sudden retirement has left the team in a difficult spot.
Dillon Radunz was competing for the position before Charles’s retirement, but Brian Callahan and Ran Carthon are not ready to hand him the role without further consideration. Andrew Rupcich and Daniel Brunskill are also vying for the spot.
If the Titans aren’t confident in their current options, they might consider signing one of these three free agents to challenge Radunz, Rupcich, and Brunskill:
1. Riley Reiff
With experience playing 6,905 snaps at left tackle, 2,133 at right tackle, 32 at right guard, and 13 at left guard, Riley Reiff has primarily been a tackle throughout his career. However, he did start a game at guard for the New England Patriots last season. Although he’s not a permanent guard, his declining foot speed with age makes a move inside plausible. His versatility could be valuable, offering the Titans both a right guard option and reliable tackle depth if needed. Additionally, Reiff’s past experience as the starting right tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals under Brian Callahan could make him a familiar and secure option.
2. Mason Cole
Although Mason Cole is primarily a center, he has proven to be a solid guard when called upon. His size might be a consideration, but he could be a viable option following Saahdiq Charles’s unexpected retirement. If Daniel Brunskill is moved back to right guard, the Titans might seek another versatile interior lineman like Cole. If Brunskill remains on the depth chart, releasing him could free up cap space, making Cole a cost-effective backup option.
3. Drew Forbes
Drew Forbes may seem like a long shot, but he could be a viable candidate for the Titans. While he has only played a limited number of snaps in the NFL, all at right guard and under Bill Callahan, his extensive preseason experience with Callahan suggests potential. Forbes’s familiarity with Callahan’s system and his previous investment in him might make him a candidate the Titans consider to challenge current options like Daniel Brunskill, Andrew Rupcich, or Lachavious Simmons.
