This topic intrigues me because I don’t see much real drama in the quarterback “competition.” While it’s always possible for someone to unexpectedly seize the job, I’ve never seriously considered that anyone other than Will Howard would be the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes when they face Akron in three weeks. Respectfully to Devin Brown, I don’t think he will reach the elite level of quarterbacks like Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, or C.J. Stroud.
That said, Devin Brown still has the potential to be a strong quarterback for Ohio State. However, given that he doesn’t possess the same standout physical abilities as some recent Buckeye quarterbacks, it makes sense to go with Will Howard, who has significant starting experience and has already led his team to a conference championship. From what we’ve seen in the early days of fall practice, Howard’s experience and game management seem to have positioned him as the frontrunner for the QB role.
For me, the key thing to watch in camp now is the only other open starting spot, which is at right guard. Speaking of which…
I think this is accurate, but I wonder if the competition might have been tighter if Carson Hinzman hadn’t missed two practices during the first week due to illness. There’s been talk of a “funky virus” affecting the offensive line, so Hinzman isn’t the only player who’s been sidelined recently.
Tegra Tshabola is a remarkably athletic and strong offensive lineman, and I’ve always seen him as the likely candidate for the right guard position. Yet, the way Ryan Day has spoken highly of Carson Hinzman at Big Ten Media Days and in press conferences suggested that there was a real possibility of Hinzman transitioning from his former starting center role to right guard.
However, in sports, particularly football, the best ability is availability, and right now, Tegra Tshabola has that advantage.
