The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers are leading contenders to sign Logan Thomas, who was recently released. Reports indicate that the 49ers are moving on from Thomas, who was initially brought in to support George Kittle. Thomas spent the past four seasons with the Commanders, where he recorded 1,685 yards and 14 touchdowns over 52 games, including 49 starts. San Francisco is currently in a challenging situation with their backup tight ends departing for the Atlanta Falcons.
The 49ers’ decision to part ways with Thomas is partly due to his hamstring injury, which has kept him out of practice during the early part of training camp. While Thomas may secure a new position before the regular season begins, his advancing age could limit his opportunities for a lengthy career. Nonetheless, once he recovers and returns to form, he could be a valuable addition to any team needing depth at the position. His injuries have impacted his performance since his standout 2020 season.
The Chiefs have been active this offseason, notably drafting Ben Sinnott, which has surprised many. With Travis Kelce’s future uncertain, even though he insists he’s not retiring, Kansas City might consider bringing in a veteran like Thomas to help mentor Sinnott. While the Chargers don’t have a pressing need for a tight end, they still have an opening for Thomas.
