Latest Update: Cardinals name replacement as John Mozeliak discusses his retirement plan

St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak won’t hold his position indefinitely. With the Cardinals currently out of the postseason race, it’s evident that leadership changes are needed if St. Louis misses the playoffs again in 2024.

Oli Marmol was given a contract extension before the season—a decision attributed to Mozeliak—so replacing the manager would only address part of the issue. The team has brought in former Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays executive Chaim Bloom as an advisor to the front office. Many believe Bloom won’t stay in that role for long. Mozeliak might even welcome a change if he’s allowed to continue with the organization.

Chaim Bloom can fix John Mozeliak’s biggest mistake with Cardinals

Among Mozeliak’s recent shortcomings, his failure to develop the St. Louis farm system stands out. While Masyn Winn shows promise, there aren’t many other standout examples of successful player development. Baseball America ranks the Cardinals’ farm system 21st in baseball, indicating mediocrity at all levels, which is unacceptable for a team on the edge of postseason contention.

Josh Jacobs of Redbird Rants noted that the addition of Chaim Bloom could address this issue:

“Bloom is well-regarded for his player development strategies and has a talent for identifying and acquiring talent. Although the Cardinals have performed well in the draft under Randy Flores, Bloom’s presence could help them take more strategic risks in future drafts,” Jacobs wrote.

Building a strong farm system is challenging. The MLB Draft offers limited top-tier talent, and inadequate development can undermine any organization, no matter the prospects. However, Bloom’s track record of success in player development should give St. Louis fans hope for a potential front office change, even if Mozeliak remains partially involved. While Bloom is not without flaws—Red Sox fans can attest to that—he represents a potential improvement over Mozeliak if ownership commits to the change.
