The potential absence of star running back De’Von Achane in the upcoming game for the Miami Dolphins is becoming increasingly likely following the team’s recent roster adjustment. According to information from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday, the Dolphins have promoted running back Darrynton Evans from the practice squad.
Evans, who joined the Miami practice squad earlier in the week, was previously waived by the Chicago Bears earlier in the month. The Dolphins are scheduled to face the New York Jets on Friday.
Darrynton Evans, a running back with a journeyman’s journey, has had a busy year, signing with four different teams, including two stints with Miami. Initially with the Buffalo Bills during the preseason, he rushed 21 times for 108 yards and scored once but didn’t make the final roster. Subsequently, he quickly joined the Dolphins, only to have his contract terminated in early October. Evans then moved on to the Chicago Bears, where he played five games, accumulating 30 rush attempts for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Originally a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Evans spent his first two years with the Tennessee Titans. He had limited playing time, running 16 times for 61 yards, before being released after the 2021 season. His next stop was with the Bears, where he rushed 14 times for 64 yards.
The Miami Dolphins may find themselves shorthanded in the running back department for Week 12. Salvon Ahmed has been placed on season-ending injured reserve, and the status of De’Von Achane remains uncertain. Achane, who injured his knee in the previous game against the Raiders, has been practicing in a limited fashion. Notably, he has an impressive average of 11.8 yards per carry this season.
In the event that Achane is unable to play, the Dolphins will rely on Raheem Mostert, a 31-year-old running back with 691 rushing yards and an NFL-leading 11 rushing touchdowns. Darrynton Evans and Jeff Wilson are expected to have opportunities in the absence of Achane and Ahmed.
