A black hole for the Yankees: Another key player lands on the IL

New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu was hit in the face by a ball while fielding grounders at first base during batting practice on Friday. Consequently, he was pulled from the starting lineup before the game against the Colorado Rockies.

LeMahieu was examined by a trainer before heading to the clubhouse. The Yankees stated that he was removed from the lineup as a precaution.

Rookie Ben Rice stepped in for LeMahieu at first base and took his spot in the ninth position in the batting order.

LeMahieu, currently in the fourth year of his six-year, $90 million contract, is struggling this season, batting just .189 with two home runs and 24 RBIs over 62 games.

The 36-year-old, who played for the Rockies from 2012 to 2018, missed the first two months of the season with a fractured right foot. LeMahieu previously won a batting title with the Yankees in 2020 and another with the Rockies in 2016.
