CONFIRMED: Boston Red Sox Set to Promote Top Prospect, a Fantastic Addition to the Lineup

The Boston Red Sox (69-64) continue to challenge the teams ahead of them in the standings. After securing victories on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the three teams above them in the Wild Card race and the two teams ahead in the divisional race each lost at least one game, the Red Sox have kept both races within their grasp. With September just around the corner, the season’s stretch run is here, bringing with it roster expansions and September call-ups.

In a recent MLB.com article, Jonathan Mayo, Jim Callis, and Sam Dykstra identified one prospect from each team who could be promoted in September. For the Red Sox, that prospect is infielder Chase Meidroth. They noted: “Boston recently promoted its Big 4 (Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel, Kristian Campbell) to Triple-A, but Meidroth has been there all season, posting a .294/.445/.395 slash line with 12 steals in 101 games.

Chase Meidroth May Deserve More Credit In Red Sox Farm System

The 2022 fourth-round pick from San Diego excels at getting on base, with second base—his best position—being a revolving door for the contending Red Sox.”

Although Meidroth may not be a power hitter, his exceptional on-base skills make up for it. While power and batting average can fluctuate between levels, the strike zone remains consistent, and Meidroth’s plate discipline and eye for the strike zone are comparable to those of Juan Soto.

At 23, Meidroth, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft, has advanced through the minor leagues, accumulating more walks (188) than strikeouts (163). Second base, a position where the Red Sox have struggled offensively this season, is where Meidroth is best suited. The team’s second basemen have combined for just a .525 OPS and a .243 OBP this season, both the worst in MLB. Meidroth would undoubtedly boost their offensive output at second base.

If promoted, Meidroth could significantly improve the Red Sox lineup. Should he maintain his plate discipline at the major league level, he has the potential to become a staple in the Red Sox lineup for years, possibly starting with a September call-up.
