Virginia Tech’s Four-Star Class of 2025 Commit Makes Shocking Flip to Penn State. What was meant to be an enjoyable weekend has turned into a nightmare for the Virginia Tech football team. After being upset in overtime on Saturday by Vanderbilt in Nashville—a team expected to finish at the bottom of the SEC this season—things got even worse on Monday for head coach Brent Pry concerning the Class of 2025 recruits.
Just 48 hours after the Hokies’ 34-27 loss to the Commodores, four-star Class of 2025 athlete Matthew Outten switched his commitment from Virginia Tech to Penn State. While it’s not certain that Saturday’s loss influenced his decision, it certainly adds to the disappointment of this Labor Day Weekend.
Outten had committed to the Hokies on July 1, and as an in-state recruit, he was one of the key additions secured by Pry and Fontel Mines this summer. Ranked as the 139th player in his class by 247Sports and the No. 6 player in Virginia, Outten will now be joining the Nittany Lions, where Pry previously served as the defensive coordinator under James Franklin.

This is a significant recruiting blow for the Hokies, who were assembling a strong class. Despite still having Micah Matthews, Jayden Anderson, and Shamaruis Peterkin committed—with Matthews and Peterkin being four-star recruits and Anderson a three-star—losing Outten is a setback. Virginia Tech now has 16 commits in the class, and Outten’s departure raises concerns about potential further defections. This is also a blow to their in-state recruiting efforts, as Outten has opted to join a Big Ten program.
