What January could present for the Lions

This is a sampling of how the country felt after the Detroit Lions’ Week 12 loss to the Green Bay Packers, 29-22.

“The Detroit Lions’ Thursday loss wouldn’t have seemed out of place if you hadn’t followed the NFL before Thanksgiving.

On the opening play, a quarterback for the Green Bay Packers shooting downfield for a 53-yard gain? observed that. The Lions scoring early on but failing to convert the extra point? A fresh crease, yet it fits. A quarterback fumble that was recovered for a touchdown and then another one immediately after? A fake punt that was stuffed at their own 23 after fooling no one?

That’s Lions football on Thanksgiving, that is true.

But Thanksgiving in Detroit was supposed to be much better this year. The Lions are a real contender. As of Thursday, they had an 8-2 record; only one NFL team had a worse record. On Thursday, it didn’t appear that way.

It was all Packers against Lions. Green Bay easily defeated Detroit, 29–22, thanks to three touchdown passes from Jordan Love and all-day pressure on Jared Goff from the undermanned defense. Thanks to a touchdown from Detroit in the last minute, the final score appeared much better.”

Beneath the happy vibes, the team’s 8-3 record, first-place standings, and the winning football style the Detroit Lions have displayed this season, there is a team that, should things stay the same, might have to deal with some harsh reality come January.

That much was clear following a dismal Thanksgiving and a 29–22 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said after the game, “They were ready, man.” “We didn’t play to their level of proficiency. We didn’t play well enough and didn’t complement one another.

Among the three phases on Thursday, there wasn’t much to commend the Lions on, nor was there much to complement them. Select your combatant. Offense? Protection? unique groups? Mentoring? It will most likely conclude in a loss, just like it did on Thursday.”
