Geno Smith’s contract extends through 2025, but after this season, he no longer has any guaranteed money. On Wednesday, Smith confirmed to reporters that his representatives had reached out to the Seahawks about a contract extension during the offseason.
“That’s true,” Smith said, according to Michael-Shawn Dugar of TheAthletic.com. “That’s just standard business. Nothing unusual about it.”
However, the Seahawks showed no interest in negotiating an extension. General Manager John Schneider stated last week that he has not had any discussions with Smith’s camp about a new deal.
Geno Smith, who turns 34 in October, signed a three-year, $75 million deal in March 2023 after earning a Pro Bowl selection and Comeback Player of the Year honors. However, the Seahawks have a long-standing policy of not extending contracts with multiple years remaining.
When head coach Mike Macdonald was first hired, he didn’t immediately commit to Smith as the starting quarterback. It wasn’t until after a trade for Sam Howell that General Manager John Schneider confirmed Smith as the team’s starter.
By choosing not to extend Smith, the Seahawks retain the flexibility to explore other options for a starting quarterback in the offseason. Alternatively, if they decide Smith is their long-term solution, they could offer him an extension at that time.
This season is crucial for Smith, who has posted a 17-15 record over the past two years with 7,906 passing yards, 50 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions.
