A.J. Minter is one of the most successful relievers in Braves history, and he aims to continue his impressive career in Atlanta. The 31-year-old underwent left-hip surgery in August, which concluded his season and might also signal the end of his tenure with the Braves, as he will be a free agent this winter.
The surgery was necessary, however, as Minter has struggled with hip problems for years, and he began experiencing lower back pain last year due to compensating for his hip issues. “My back was having to overcompensate for my hip,” he explained. “This year, both the back and hip were problematic, and my velocity and performance declined.
Despite being in severe pain and still able to pitch, I knew I needed to address these issues because I wasn’t contributing effectively at only 80%. Thankfully, we have capable bullpen members who can handle the workload.” Minter’s goal is to be ready for the next season, though it could be with a different team, marking the end of a distinguished Braves career.
Since his debut in 2017, Minter has made 384 appearances for the Braves, ranking third among relievers in franchise history, behind Gene Garber (557) and Mark Wohlers (388). He has been a six-time division champion and played a crucial role in the renowned “night shift” bullpen that helped secure the 2021 World Series.
Manager Brian Snitker has frequently acknowledged how challenging it has been to replace Minter: “He has been a vital part of our bullpen for many years. He was key to our World Series win and all our division titles. He’s always been proactive and dedicated, and he’s done an outstanding job. I hope he returns to his full strength.” If Minter’s hopes come true, his story in Atlanta may have more chapters to unfold.
