Liam Hendriks has recently paused his rehab process after making appearances for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in the Boston Red Sox organization. While the three-time All-Star still hopes to pitch in his first season with the Red Sox, the remaining time in the season is limited. Manager Alex Cora acknowledged that the calendar may be Hendriks’ biggest hurdle, with Boston “very close” to deciding to shut him down for the rest of 2024.
“As you know, time is running out,” Cora said to reporters at Fenway Park on Wednesday. “We have to decide what we’re going to do. It’s not unexpected, but it was always a possibility in the process.”

Hendriks, who underwent Tommy John surgery late last season, had hoped to debut for Boston after signing with the team in the offseason. With a career 3.82 ERA and 116 saves over 13 MLB seasons, the Red Sox have just 17 games left and are four games behind in the race for the final American League playoff spot, making a Hendriks debut unlikely this season.
