Breaking News: Red Sox give RHP one last shot to make an impact, option another starter

The Red Sox are giving Luis García one last opportunity to make an impact.

García, who landed on the injured list on August 27 with right elbow inflammation, was reinstated on Saturday. To clear space for the 37-year-old, the Red Sox optioned Cooper Criswell to Triple-A Worcester.

García’s stint in Boston has been rough, posting a 10.32 ERA across 11 bullpen appearances. Over 11 1/3 innings, he’s allowed 13 earned runs on 21 hits, including four home runs. After experiencing discomfort in his elbow, Boston made a quick decision to place him on the IL.

He recently completed a rehab stint, tossing a scoreless inning on September 17 for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Meanwhile, Criswell has been a solid contributor for the Red Sox, posting a 4.08 ERA over 26 big-league appearances, including 18 starts. However, with the Red Sox turning to Richard Fitts to fill the final spot in the rotation, the 28-year-old has become expendable for the remainder of the season.

The Red Sox face the Twins at Fenway Park on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. ET, with coverage on NESN following an hour of pregame analysis.
