Erik Beaston of Bleacher Report suggests it might come down to the Yankees and Mets, highlighting the advantages each team could offer Soto. He notes that the Yankees, having regained the AL East title in 2024, are a strong fit for Soto, especially alongside Aaron Judge. Meanwhile, the Mets are also serious contenders, looking to build on their impressive season. Adding Soto would enhance their already potent offense and fit well into their outfield.
Beaston emphasizes that while several teams will be eager to sign him, it seems like a two-horse race between the New York rivals. He believes Soto has a preference to stay with the Yankees, but there’s a possibility that the Mets, under Steve Cohen, could outbid them. Ultimately, Beaston predicts Soto will sign a “near-record deal” with the Mets.
Aaron Judge Impressed With Soto’s Play
Soto can look to Aaron Judge for guidance, as Judge was in a similar situation before signing a nine-year, $360 million deal in December 2022. Given Soto’s youth, he’s likely to command even more money, but Judge understands the pressures of free agency and playing for the Yankees.
Despite the challenges of focusing on winning while dealing with contract distractions, Judge admires Soto’s professionalism and commitment to the team. “He finds a way to impact the game every day,” Judge said on September 10, according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN. “He’s always focused on the team, which I really appreciate. It can be tough when it’s your third team and you’re heading into free agency.”
Judge noted the pressure Soto faces from fans, with chants like “Sign a contract, stay here!” and comments from opposing fans. Still, he views Soto’s ability to handle it as impressive. Having Judge alongside him could be a major draw for the Yankees, as the two would form a powerful duo for years to come.
Would Soto Sign With the Mets?
While Soto has reasons to remain with the Yankees, the Mets might present the most lucrative offer. If he’s inclined to stay in the Bronx, it would depend on whether the Yankees can meet his financial expectations.
There’s uncertainty about whether he would choose the Mets if they offered $550 million while the Yankees offered $525 million. If it comes down to money, Mets owner Steve Cohen has demonstrated a willingness to invest heavily in players he desires. Historically, the Yankees have also been big spenders, adding another layer of intrigue to Soto’s impending free agency.
