Scott Ratzlaff has had an impressive preseason, standing out among prospects, but his future in Buffalo seems uncertain unless Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen struggles and the Sabres can’t establish stability at goaltender in the meantime.
Devon Levi is not mentioned here because, in that scenario, he would likely become the top goalie, leaving the question of who would be his backup. While Ratzlaff could fit that role, if the Sabres aim for a playoff run in the Second Lindy Ruff Era, they might view Ratzlaff as a valuable trade asset.
In a playoff contention scenario, the Sabres would likely either have a solid goaltender situation or sign experienced veterans to support Luukkonen or Levi. This situation leaves Ratzlaff as the odd man out due to his limited experience, despite his strong preseason performances; it may take time before he earns the trust to play in regular-season games.
Looking at the league, teams such as the San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild (likely in a rebuilding phase), Columbus Blue Jackets, Anaheim Ducks, and possibly the Calgary Flames could be in search of a potential franchise goaltender. Ratzlaff’s demonstrated potential might make him an appealing target for another organization, especially if the Sabres consider a late-season trade this year.
