Maple Leafs Officially Sign Rivals Top Starter On a Multi-Million Dollar Deal
This potential blockbuster deal would see Toronto reacquire Kadri in exchange for three NHL players and two second-round picks. Kadri is currently in the third year of a seven-year, $49 million contract he signed with the Flames in 2022. He can play both center and wing, providing an offensive boost; last season, he played all 82 games, scoring 29 goals and adding 46 assists for a total of 75 points. He was with the Maple Leafs from 2009 to 2019.
In return, the Maple Leafs would send Robertson, who requested a trade this offseason. He signed a one-year deal worth $875,000 but could help fill the offensive gap left by Kadri in Calgary.
Kampf is in the second year of a four-year, $9.6 million contract. As Toronto’s fourth-line center, he plays a significant defensive role, tallying 8 goals and 11 assists for 19 points over 78 games last season.
Liljegren, a former first-round pick, has been a healthy scratch at the start of the 2024-25 NHL season. He signed a two-year, $6 million extension but might benefit from a change of environment. Last season, he played 55 games, scoring 3 goals and recording 20 assists for 23 points.
Kadri Shuts Down Trade Rumors
Despite being in the third year of his seven-year contract with Calgary, Nazem Kadri’s name has surfaced in trade rumors. However, as the 2024-25 NHL season approaches, Kadri expressed to reporters his desire to stay in Calgary.
“I think it’s a bit early for these kinds of questions, so I’d ask you all to pump the brakes,” Kadri said. “Let us play, and we’ll try to rally around each other and surprise some people. I love the city and the organization.”
If Kadri were to seek a trade, he would be one of the most sought-after players on the market. The veteran forward brings scoring and physicality to any team, along with valuable Stanley Cup experience from his victory with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022.
Maple Leafs Give Liljegren Permission to Seek Trade
After being a healthy scratch at the start of the season, Timothy Liljegren’s name has emerged in trade discussions. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Maple Leafs have allowed the former first-round pick to explore potential deals with other teams.
“Toronto is emphasizing patience in this situation. They believe there’s no reason he can’t still contribute to the team,” Friedman said on Hockey Night in Canada. “However, he’s 25 years old and wants to play. He’s looking for a situation where he can be on the ice.”
Friedman noted that while there were rumors of Liljegren being granted permission to speak with other teams, the Maple Leafs have denied this claim. Nevertheless, they are encouraging him to be patient as he seeks playing time, which is understandable from a player’s perspective.
Liljegren was selected 17th overall by the Maple Leafs in the 2017 NHL Draft. Over his NHL career, he has played in 196 games, tallying 14 goals and 51 assists for a total of 65 points.
