Will Kansas Jayhawks’ Star CB Play Against Houston? Latest Injury Update

Kansas football seemed poised to snap its slump in the last game against Arizona State, but the defense faltered in the closing moments, giving up a game-winning touchdown in the final seconds, resulting in a Sun Devils victory.

Lance Leipold’s squad left Tempe with a disappointing 1-5 record, and to make matters worse, their top defensive player was sidelined after suffering what appeared to be a leg or knee injury late in the fourth quarter. Now, Cobee Bryant faces the possibility of missing his first game since his freshman year, as the Jayhawks prepare to face Houston on Saturday.

Kansas Football: Cobee Bryant's Availability in Doubt for Houston Game

Leipold’s update during Wednesday’s press conference wasn’t encouraging. KU’s star cornerback hasn’t practiced in over a week, raising doubts about his availability.

Cobee Bryant’s status remains uncertain for Kansas football homecoming

“He’s probably highly questionable at this time. He’s doing a little bit but hasn’t taken any team reps in over a week.”

Cobee Bryant appeared to be in significant pain when he went down and left the game against Arizona State. Despite Kansas benefiting from an extra week of rest after the bye, the Preseason All-Big 12 First Team cornerback still hasn’t returned to full practice, raising serious concerns about his availability for this weekend’s game and potentially for the weeks ahead.

Though Bryant hasn’t played at his usual level in 2024 — with costly mistakes against UNLV and Arizona State — he’s been the standout player in Kansas’ defensive backfield for three straight seasons. In six games this year, he’s posted 20 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and one interception.

Kansas’ cornerback depth is already thin, and the defense has struggled recently. If Bryant misses the upcoming homecoming game, Mello Dotson would likely step in as CB1, with former LSU transfer Damarius McGhee stepping up in his absence. This injury could be a significant blow to the Jayhawks.
