Ravens Soar: Veteran Cornerback Returns to Boost the Defense

The Baltimore Ravens’ secondary, initially generating buzz for its talent and depth, is set to welcome back a crucial player with the activation of veteran nickel cornerback Arthur Maulet from injured reserve on Tuesday.

After missing the first seven games of the season due to knee and hamstring injuries, the eighth-year veteran is making his long-anticipated return to a Ravens secondary that has faced criticism for allowing big plays.

Maulet returned to practice on October 2, nearing the end of the 21-day window to be added to the active roster or placed on season-ending injured reserve. He participated fully in Saturday’s practice ahead of the Ravens’ 41-31 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football.

His return comes at a pivotal moment for the Ravens, as three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marlon Humphrey, who has been filling the nickel role during three-receiver sets, may be dealing with a minor injury. Humphrey, after making two crucial interceptions in the first half, left the game just before halftime and did not return. Head coach John Harbaugh noted he didn’t have a definitive diagnosis but believed the injury to be “not too serious.”

Postgame, Humphrey was seen walking around the locker room without issues and even participated in his usual celebratory Instagram live session, appearing in good spirits. Regardless of whether he misses any time, Maulet’s return strengthens the Ravens’ deep defensive backfield, allowing him to rotate with fourth-year pro Ar’Darius Washington alongside Humphrey.

Last season was Maulet’s best, as he thrived in Baltimore and proved effective both in coverage and as a blitzer. The former undrafted free agent played 14 games, tallying 37 total tackles (32 solo), two sacks, and one interception, leading the Ravens to re-sign him to a two-year deal this offseason.

Maulet’s recovery from a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery has kept him sidelined until now. He is poised to make his 2024 regular-season debut in Week 8 against the struggling Cleveland Browns in an AFC North divisional clash.

To make room for Maulet on the roster, the team waived inside linebacker Josh Ross, who had participated in all seven games this season, primarily on special teams, and recorded five tackles.
