Panthers QB Makes Epic Comeback Reclaims Starting Role and Revives Team Spirit
After a five-game absence, quarterback Bryce Young is set to return as the starter for the Carolina Panthers when they face the Denver Broncos on October 27. Interestingly, it wasn’t the team’s four-game losing streak that prompted this change; rather, it was Andy Dalton’s unfortunate sprained thumb, which he sustained in a car accident on Tuesday. Panthers coach Dave Canales confirmed on Wednesday that Young will lead the offense this Sunday.
Bryce will be playing this week for us,” Canales stated, adding that they will assess Dalton’s condition on a daily basis leading up to the game to determine if he can serve as the backup.
Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, started 16 games in his rookie season and began 2024 in the same role. However, he was benched after two games in favor of Dalton. When hearing about Dalton’s accident,
Me and Andy are super, super close,” Young said. “I was just worried for him. I’m glad he and his family are okay, but that was my main concern.”
Canales noted that the starting quarterback role would be evaluated week-to-week based on Dalton’s recovery. Young emphasized that he doesn’t view this game as a chance to reassert himself as the starter.
For me, it’s just day-by-day,” Young explained. “I focus on being the best I can be in meetings and practice, and on helping the team on Sunday. How things are perceived outside of that is beyond my control.”
Reflecting on his benching, Young described it as a challenging new experience. He leaned on his faith and support from teammates and family during this period, expressing gratitude for his situation.
I’m still super grateful for where I am today,” Young said. “There are things in life that are out of my control, but I choose to focus on the positives.”
Canales praised Young for his professionalism during the transition, describing him as “an absolute stud” who remained engaged throughout his time as a backup.
He approached this hard situation with class and integrity,” Canales said. “Now he gets to go back out there and play football.”
My job is to always prepare as if I’m going to play,” he stated. “That’s just part of the business.”
