Brent Venables Faces Crucial Coaching Decision at Oklahoma

Brent Venables is confronted with one of the most significant hires of his head coaching career at Oklahoma. Following the decision to dismiss Seth Littrell as the Sooners’ offensive coordinator just seven games into their first SEC season, Venables now needs to find a third offensive coordinator capable of quickly rejuvenating Oklahoma’s struggling offense. This season, the Sooners have ranked among the worst offenses in the FBS, a stark contrast to their historical performance over the past 25 years. Restoring the program’s offensive prowess is Venables’ top priority in the coming weeks.

With more than a month remaining before the regular season concludes on November 30 against LSU, Venables has time to conduct a thorough search. As he noted on Tuesday, there are limitations on what he can do at this point, but the urgency of making the right hire remains critical.

That timeline will soon tighten, especially as the end of the season nears. The early signing period begins on December 4, just four days after the Sooners’ final game, and the transfer portal opens on December 9. Having a new coordinator in place shortly after the LSU game is crucial for Oklahoma to maintain its recruiting class, keep current players, and strengthen the roster with transfers.

Despite the offensive struggles this season, the offensive coordinator position at OU is highly sought after in college football, attracting interest from prominent names in the coaching world. Keeping that in mind, along with insights from Sooners insider Collin Kennedy, here’s Version 2.0 of Sooners Illustrated’s offensive coordinator hot board, featuring a few new candidates and one removed, listed alphabetically.
