Panthers LB Reveals Intense Battle with Medical Emergencies, Surviving Blood Clots in His Lungs
D.J. Wonnum is preparing for his first NFL action in nearly a year, finally back on the practice field with the Carolina Panthers after an extensive recovery period on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. The fifth-year linebacker addressed reporters on Thursday, sharing the complexities of his journey back from a significant quadriceps surgery he underwent in December 2023.
Reflecting on his recovery, Wonnum detailed the challenges he faced, which included multiple surgeries and a serious battle with blood clots. “I had my procedure on Christmas Eve last year, and since then I’ve had two or three more surgeries,” he explained. “I also had to deal with blood clots in my lungs. It’s been a lot to handle.
Wonnum described the intense physical and emotional toll of his situation, emphasizing the daily hospital visits required to manage his condition. “I was in the hospital every day for treatment. I even dealt with MRSA in my knee, which required a strong course of antibiotics to clear up,” he said. “It’s been a tough road, and it often felt like I was making progress only to be hit with setbacks.”
The linebacker expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his recovery, recognizing the importance of his teammates and medical staff in helping him navigate this difficult time. “I couldn’t have done this alone. Having the support from the team and the medical staff made a huge difference,” Wonnum stated.
As he resumes practice, Wonnum is focused on regaining his form and contributing to the Panthers “It feels great to be back on the field. I’ve missed the game, and I’m excited to work with my teammates again,” he said.
With his return on the horizon, D.J. Wonnum remains optimistic about his future in the NFL, determined to overcome the obstacles he has faced and eager to make an impact on the field.
