Georgia Holds Steady, But the SEC Rankings Shuffle Dramatically
Georgia football enjoyed its second bye week of the season, making it unlikely for them to shift in the latest AP Poll. Following their impressive victory over Texas last weekend, it seemed nearly impossible for any team to surpass Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs. However, AP voters can be unpredictable.
The only scenario in which Georgia could realistically move up would be if Oregon lost, but the Ducks dominated Illinois with a 38-9 win, keeping them firmly at No. 1.
As a result, Georgia remained at No. 2 in this week’s AP Poll, earning one first-place vote—one less than last week. While the Bulldogs stayed put, the rest of the SEC saw significant movement after a weekend filled with thrilling games.
SEC Teams in the AP Poll
|
Team | Rank |
---|
Georgia | 2 |
Texas | 6 |
Tennessee | 7 |
Texas A&M | 10 |
Alabama | 14 |
LSU | 16 |
Ole Miss | 19 |
Missouri | 25 |
After their loss to Georgia, Texas faced Vanderbilt and scraped by with a narrow three-point victory, which dropped them one spot to No. 6.
The biggest movers were Texas A&M, who climbed four spots to No. 10 after defeating LSU 38-23 in the SEC’s marquee matchup. Conversely, LSU plummeted eight spots to No. 16 following that defeat.
Missouri managed to stay in the rankings, falling just four spots to No. 25 despite a 34-0 loss to Alabama, which moved up one spot to No. 14.
Ole Miss, struggling for part of their game against Oklahoma, slipped one spot to No. 19.
Vanderbilt, on the other hand, fell out of the rankings after their close loss to Texas. The decision to keep Missouri in the top 25 while dropping Vanderbilt is puzzling, but this landscape is likely to shift again soon with the upcoming College Football Playoff rankings.
