Brian Daboll Exposed NFL Rules Loophole By Taking A Dumb Penalty On Purpose In Crucial Moment
Brian Daboll capitalized on a loophole in the NFL rulebook to give the New York Giants one last offensive chance during their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He purposefully fielded 12 players to draw a penalty.
Unfortunately, the plan backfired when Daniel Jones threw an interception.
With 2:53 left in the fourth quarter, the Steelers handed off to Najee Harris, who gained seven yards, putting the Giants in a tough spot. Daboll, armed with three timeouts, called his first one immediately, stopping the clock at 2:47.
The key moment came when Daboll sent 12 players onto the field for a 2nd-and-3 situation. The officials stopped the play before the snap, resulting in a penalty for too many players. This five-yard penalty awarded the Steelers a first down without using any clock time, as it was enforced on a “no play.”
With two timeouts and the two-minute warning, the Giants managed to stop the clock after three consecutive plays, forcing a punt.
If Daboll hadn’t taken the intentional penalty, the Steelers could have run out the clock with a first down. Instead, thanks to the unique loophole and a strong defensive stand, the Giants regained possession with 1:53 remaining in the game.
While Joe Buck and Troy Aikman missed the strategic nuances, Peyton and Eli Manning quickly recognized Daboll’s tactic. Ultimately, however, it was all for naught as Daniel Jones threw a pick, ending an eight-play, 58-yard drive and sealing the Giants’ fate, leaving them at 2-6 for the season.
