Packers To Shake-up Roster With Surprising Trade Before Deadline
Tick, tick, tick.
The NFL trade deadline on November 5 is quickly approaching.
The Green Bay Packers are in need of reinforcements on the defensive line and in the secondary. They remain the favorites to acquire Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett. However, if the Browns decide to keep their star player and the Packers can’t land their top target, here are a few other potential trade candidates.
Trey Hendrickson, a 29-year-old defensive end, has been selected to three consecutive Pro Bowls and has accumulated 66.5 sacks over his first 7.5 seasons. Known as ‘Big Play Trey’ in Cincinnati, he has already recorded 7.0 sacks and 36 pressures this season, providing a much-needed boost to a struggling pass rush like Green Bay’s.
So, why might he be available? For starters, Hendrickson requested a trade during the offseason. Additionally, the Bengals (3-5) have underperformed this year, leading them to consider whether they are in rebuild mode. If that’s the case, Hendrickson, who becomes a free agent after the 2025 season, might not fit into their future plans.
Greg Newsome, the son of former Packer cornerback Craig Newsome, was the Browns’ first-round pick in 2021 (26th overall) and made the Professional Football Writers Association’s All-Rookie team that year with nine passes defended. He started 15 games in 2022, with 42 tackles and half a sack, and had a standout 2023 season, leading the team with a career-high 14 passes defended and scoring a touchdown on an interception return.
Despite struggling this season, the 24-year-old Newsome offers great versatility, having played both boundary corner and slot. At 6 feet and 192 pounds, he possesses the size that Green Bay typically seeks. With the Browns at 2-6, a rebuild might make a player like Newsome available.
Lastly, there’s Chase Young, the second overall pick in the 2020 draft, who is now on his third team. Young has demonstrated exceptional talent with 16.5 sacks and six forced fumbles in his first 4.5 seasons, but he’s had limited impact in New Orleans this year with only 2.0 sacks and 11 tackles.
Currently on a one-year “prove-it” deal, Young could be an option for the Packers, allowing them to part ways after this season if they choose. While he may not be their top choice for bolstering the pass rush, trade deadline acquisitions rarely come without their trade-offs.
