After the San Francisco 49ers’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys last week, star pass rusher Nick Bosa turned heads in his postgame interview—not for his game performance, but for his choice of a hat supporting presidential candidate Donald Trump. While the NFL initially stayed silent on the matter, it now appears the league is taking a closer look, planning to “review” Bosa’s display of the “Make America Great Again” hat.
According to Mark Maske of The Washington Post, Bosa could be fined, though suspension isn’t on the table, and a final decision is unlikely this week. Maske shared on social media that the NFL rules prohibit players from displaying personal messages on game days, including during postgame interviews, unless pre-approved by the League office. This rule aims to keep personal expressions off the field, whether they appear in pregame warm-ups, on the bench, or during postgame interviews.
When asked about his choice to wear the hat, Bosa was brief, hinting at its significance: “I’m not gonna talk too much about it,” he said, “but I think it’s an important time.” Known as a longtime Trump supporter, Bosa has largely kept his political views low-profile recently, especially on social media. But with this bold move, he made his stance clear and may now face a financial penalty.
Bosa and the 49ers won’t play again until after the Presidential Election, so there won’t be another opportunity for Bosa to wear similar items on game day. The election being only days away has seen more athletes openly endorse candidates. Meanwhile, across the sports world, LeBron James recently made headlines for his official endorsement of Kamala Harris.
Bosa, drafted second overall in 2019, has been a defensive force for San Francisco, helping lead the 49ers to two Super Bowl appearances and securing the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year award after a dominant season with 18.5 sacks. This season, after overcoming a rocky start and key injuries, the 49ers have fought their way back to a 4-4 record and are pushing hard for the playoffs. They’ll be back in action on November 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a matchup crucial to their postseason aspirations.
