Broncos Stay Put: Even with Playoff Spot in Reach, The NFL trade deadline passed on Tuesday afternoon without the Denver Broncos making any moves. Despite sitting in a playoff spot, head coach Sean Payton and GM George Paton are opting to stick with the roster they have for the rest of the season. The only trade the Broncos made was sending OLB Baron Browning to the Arizona Cardinals on Monday in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
While it’s a bit disappointing that Denver didn’t act as a “buyer” at the deadline, given their 5-4 record and current position as the No. 7 seed in the AFC, their focus seems to be on getting healthy and managing roster spots for the weeks ahead. As 9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan insider Mike Klis pointed out just before the 2:00 p.m. MT cutoff, adding players at this stage may not have been a realistic option for the Broncos.
Despite a rough 41-10 loss to the Ravens on Sunday, the Broncos’ playoff hopes are still alive. The AFC playoff race is tight, with Denver sitting in the mix among nine teams vying for seven spots, and the Bengals and Colts close behind at 4-5.
The road ahead won’t be easy, however, as the Broncos head to Kansas City this weekend to face the undefeated Chiefs. With Patrick Mahomes leading the way, the Chiefs are cruising through the AFC West at 8-0 and look like the team to beat.
The stretch run is here, and rookie QB Bo Nix will aim to guide the Broncos to the postseason in his first year. But despite the urgency, Denver didn’t make any major moves at the trade deadline, meaning Nix and the team will have to rely on the current roster to make a playoff push.
