Browns Hit Hard as Star Player Faces Grim Outlook for NFL Future

The Cleveland Browns Hit Hard as Star Player is sidelined and are not ready to part ways with Deshaun Watson after his season-ending Achilles injury, but his future with the team is unclear. Watson tore his Achilles in Week 7, marking his second straight season-ending injury after a fractured shoulder sidelined him last year. Since 2020, he has played just 19 games.

Browns GM Andrew Berry stressed that the team’s focus is on Watson’s recovery, saying, “Our focus is making sure he fully recovers from the Achilles injury.”

The Browns said there's a "change" Deshaun Watson could play again for the franchise.

While Watson’s health is a priority, his future as the starting quarterback is in doubt. He’s under contract through 2026 with a fully guaranteed deal, meaning the Browns would face heavy cap penalties if they move on. When asked about Watson returning as starter, Berry replied, “Yeah, I think that’s always possible,” but offered no strong endorsement. Watson’s 1-6 record this season and poor play have raised questions about his performance, though some blame factors like poor protection and weak receiver support.

The Browns have no clear backup plan at quarterback and are stuck with Watson’s large cap hit. Berry didn’t want to evaluate Watson’s performance yet, focusing instead on finishing the season strong.

The trade for Watson, which cost three first-round picks, has been widely criticized as one of the worst in NFL history. Still, Berry defended the decision, saying the team was fully behind it from the start.
