Dolphins HC nixed Veteran Starter`s deal to Rivals ahead trade deadline. Before the NFL trade deadline on November 5, the Ravens aimed to strengthen their defensive line by bringing back a familiar face: Calais Campbell. After thriving in Baltimore from 2020 to 2022, the Ravens were eager to see him return and bolster their defense.
However, as the trade talks intensified, the Dolphins resisted. Multiple sources suggest that, just days before the deadline, the deal appeared close to completion, with Campbell poised to return to the Ravens. But then Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel intervened, halting the trade. McDaniel felt that Campbell was too important to let go, and he made it clear in a meeting with Campbell, telling him face-to-face why he was staying.
McDaniel couldn’t justify trading away a team leader and defensive pillar, especially at a time when the Dolphins were struggling with a 2-6 record. Although moving Campbell could free up cap space and bring in a future draft pick, McDaniel valued Campbell’s leadership and believed the team still had a chance to turn things around. If the Dolphins managed to make a late-season push, Campbell would be a key part of that effort.
Since then, the Dolphins have won two straight games, improving to 4-6. Heading into their Week 12 matchup against the 3-8 Patriots, the Dolphins are still in the playoff hunt.
Campbell’s impact has been undeniable, especially in Miami’s Week 10 win over the Rams, where he recorded a sack, batted down two passes, and helped lead a four-sack performance. The 38-year-old has also contributed to the Dolphins’ defense in their Week 11 victory over the Raiders. With crucial games ahead against the Patriots, Jets, and Browns, Campbell’s leadership will be vital if the Dolphins are to keep their playoff hopes alive.
