Clemson Tigers Land in Ugly Dilemma as They Secure Promising 2025 QB Prospect

With the early signing period for the 2025 high school football recruiting class approaching next month, the Clemson Tigers faced a glaring issue: they lacked a quarterback commitment. That changed on Tuesday when Chris Denson, a 3-star quarterback from Plant City, Florida, announced on X that he had flipped his commitment from Coastal Carolina to Clemson. Denson had been committed to Coastal Carolina since April but made the switch just one day after receiving an offer from Dabo Swinney and his staff.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Denson is the No. 839 overall prospect in his class and the No. 50 quarterback in the nation. Alongside Clemson and Coastal Carolina, he held offers from Minnesota, Pitt, South Florida, Toledo, Liberty, Akron, and others.

Per MaxPreps, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed quarterback has had an impressive senior season, throwing for 2,334 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just three interceptions in 12 games. He’s also shown his dual-threat ability, rushing for 1,159 yards and 12 touchdowns on 113 carries.

While flipping a 3-star recruit from Coastal Carolina may not be a blockbuster move, it’s a crucial win for Clemson. The Tigers were left scrambling to fill their quarterback spot after 4-star QB Blake Herbert decommitted and pledged to Notre Dame in October. Swinney and his staff had limited time to find a replacement, making Denson’s commitment a vital addition to the 2025 class.

With Denson’s commitment, Clemson’s 2025 recruiting class now includes 14 players and is ranked No. 26 nationally by 247Sports. The early signing window runs from December 4-6, giving schools a final opportunity to solidify their classes. Landing Denson at this critical juncture is a significant late boost for Clemson’s recruiting efforts.
