Ravens TE Mark Andrews placed on IR after ankle surgery
Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews has been placed on injured reserve, as confirmed by the team on Saturday. The three-time Pro Bowler is set to sit out a minimum of four games due to a cracked fibula and ankle ligament damage sustained in Week 11 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Initially, the team anticipated a longer absence for Andrews.
During the Ravens’ 38-20 victory over the Bengals, Andrews suffered the injury in the first quarter following a hip-drop tackle from Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson. This type of tackle, reminiscent of the one that led to Patrick Mahomes’ high ankle sprain in the previous postseason, sparked discussions about whether such plays should be prohibited in the NFL.
Despite concerns about NFL rules, the Ravens, after their win, prioritized Andrews’ serious injury over the debate. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh initially expressed that the injury appeared to be season-ending in a postgame news conference. However, by Monday, Harbaugh’s outlook shifted as he spoke to reporters before Andrews’ consultation with foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte.
Following successful surgery on Tuesday, Harbaugh, while remaining optimistic, did not provide a specific timeline for Andrews’ return. It is probable that Andrews will be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season, but there is a chance of a comeback if the Ravens progress deep into the postseason.
With an 8-3 record, leading the AFC North with six games left, the Ravens have elevated linebacker Josh Ross and safety Andrew Adams from the practice squad to address Andrews’ absence. The team is scheduled to face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
