Padres Bring Infielder Back on Minor League Deal
The Padres are bringing back infielder Mason McCoy on a minor league contract, according to Russell Dorsey of Yahoo! Sports. McCoy, a glove-first utility player, will join major league camp as a non-roster invitee.
This marks McCoy’s second season with San Diego. After being outrighted off Toronto’s 40-man roster last winter, he signed a minor league deal with the Padres. The former sixth-round pick made his MLB debut in 2023 with the Blue Jays, appearing in six games. He got a longer look with the Padres after being called up in late August, making 19 appearances and posting a .204/.278/.245 line with two doubles in 57 plate appearances.
McCoy earned 16 starts at shortstop due to Ha-Seong Kim’s shoulder injury but was sidelined by back inflammation at the season’s end. While the Padres opted not to tender him a contract, McCoy made enough of an impression to earn a minor league offer.
This year, McCoy posted a solid .260/.329/.382 slash line in 432 plate appearances for Triple-A El Paso. Over four seasons at Triple-A, he’s a .239/.318/.400 hitter and swiped 25 bases while primarily playing shortstop. McCoy has also logged time at second base and third base, with limited experience in left and center field. He’s expected to start the season in the minors but could be called up if injuries create a need for an additional utility player on the Padres’ bench.
