In today’s edition of Auburn Tigers News, another wide receiver announces plans to hit the transfer portal and head coach Hugh Freeze discusses the impact of DL coach Vontrell King-Williams
Today marks the start of the NCAA transfer portal, and another Auburn football player has announced his decision to enter. Wide receiver Caleb Burton III is set to seek a new school after spending two seasons at Auburn.
Burton, a 4-star recruit from Texas, began his career at Ohio State before transferring to Auburn ahead of the 2023 season. He appeared to be carving out a role in the rotation, but his playing time diminished in 2024 with the addition of freshmen Cam Coleman and Malcolm Simmons, as well as veteran KeAndre Lambert-Smith.
Burton’s time at Auburn concludes with 18 receptions for 275 yards, 16 of which came last season.
Hugh Freeze discusses the impact of DL coach Vontrell King-Williams
As some players prepare to leave Auburn, a talented group of true freshmen is set to arrive, including an impressive collection of defensive linemen. The Tigers successfully signed five defensive linemen last week, with four of them being from within the state.
Head coach Hugh Freeze credited defensive line coach Vontrell King-Williams as the key to securing the group, which includes several 5-star recruits.
“As these top recruits started coming to practice and saw the way he works with the defensive line and interacts with them, they got to know him better,” Freeze said, according to Auburn Rivals. “His persistence in recruiting players like Malik, Antonio, Jourdin, Darrion, and Jared, combined with the efforts of Josh (Aldridge), helped land a very impressive high school defensive line class.”
