Ole Miss quarterback Walker Howard is leaving Oxford after just two seasons with the Rebels.
Multiple reports confirm that the former blue-chip recruit is returning to the transfer portal. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz was the first to break the news on Sunday.
A 4-star recruit from the 2022 class, Howard was ranked as the fifth-best quarterback and 40th overall prospect by the 247 Composite. He gained attention at St. Thomas More in Lafayette, Louisiana, before initially committing to LSU.
However, after playing in only two games and attempting just four passes during his first season with the Tigers, Howard decided to enter the transfer portal.
When Howard transferred to Ole Miss ahead of the 2023 season, he joined a quarterback room filled with talent. Veterans Jaxson Dart and Spencer Sanders were already in place, and Austin Simmons, a blue-chip prospect, was enrolled early.
Howard made just two appearances in 2023, attempting only four passes. This season, he lost out to Simmons for the backup spot and appeared in just two games, throwing two passes.
As a highly ranked recruit, Howard was once seen as a potential Day 2 NFL Draft pick. Now, after three years of college football, he has thrown a total of just 10 passes. Wherever he lands next, Howard will likely be seeking a fresh opportunity to compete for a starting job, with two years of eligibility remaining.
With Dart leaving, Ole Miss will have Simmons and 2024 signee AJ Maddox vying for the starting role in 2025. The Rebels have not yet signed a quarterback for the 2025 class.
