Injury could bench Drew Lock, paving the way for a backup showdown against the Ravens.
With Drew Lock wearing a walking boot due to a heel injury, Tommy DeVito could step in as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants on Sunday, aiming to snap their eight-game losing streak against the Baltimore Ravens. Coach Brian Daboll confirmed the injury news on Wednesday as the Giants (2-11) prepare to face the Ravens (8-5) at MetLife Stadium, where they’ve yet to win this season.
Lock sustained the injury last weekend after being sacked twice and hit 13 times in a 14-11 loss to the Saints.
DeVito, who has been through a whirlwind season, emphasized the importance of staying ready for anything. “You’ve got to be ready for whatever happens,” he said. “At this point, there’s almost no surprises. Whoever’s out there, we’re going to support them.”
The quarterback situation has been in flux since the Giants benched and released Daniel Jones on Nov. 22. DeVito, an undrafted rookie, started against Tampa Bay on Nov. 24, completing 21 of 31 passes for 189 yards before injuring his right forearm in the 30-7 loss.
The New Jersey native stated that his arm feels fine and that he’s not dwelling on the losing streak.
“I think it’s just continuing to prove to myself that I belong,” DeVito said. “I just want to play at the highest level I know I can, consistently, and focus on winning football games. That’s what it’s all about.”
Tight end Daniel Bellinger noted that the biggest challenge for the receivers is adjusting to DeVito’s cadence.
Rookie receiver Malik Nabers, who leads the Giants with 80 catches for 819 yards and three touchdowns, disagreed, saying, “I don’t feel like it’s difficult. I’ve caught enough passes from him and run enough routes with him. We both know the playbook, so I don’t think it’s hard at all. It’s just another hill to climb.”
Lock started against the Cowboys in a Thanksgiving loss and again against the Saints, where New Orleans blocked a late field goal by Graham Gano that could have forced overtime.
