Padres won’t reduce expenses by trading two key players.

MLB teams considering a move for two exceptional talents can now breathe easy after hearing Ken Rosenthal’s latest update. As Brayden Haena of ClutchPoints shared, Rosenthal reported on Foul Territory this Thursday that:

Tatis and Machado aren’t going anywhere,” Rosenthal stated on The Athletic’s podcast. “They both have long-term contracts, and both have no-trade clauses. That’s not in the cards.”

The Padres have a payroll of $150.3 million for the upcoming season, with Spotrac forecasting their total cap allocation to reach $205.1 million. Tatis Jr. ($20.71 million) and Machado ($17.09 million) will be the third and fifth-highest-paid players on the team, respectively, heading into next year.

While trading one or both of their contracts could free up cap space, the Padres would be losing key offensive contributors. Machado finished 16th in the National League MVP voting, thanks to 29 home runs, 105 RBIs, and a .275/.325/.472 slash line in 2024. Tatis Jr. also had an impressive season, scoring 64 runs and posting an .833 OPS, which earned him his second career All-Star selection.

That said, the Padres are set to keep both Machado and Tatis Jr. while focusing on moving other players nearing the final year of their contracts, like ace Dylan Cease and Luis Arraez. Holding on to Machado and Tatis Jr. provides stability, as Machado is entering the third year of his 11-year, $350 million extension signed in 2023, and Tatis Jr. will begin the fifth year of his 14-year, $340 million deal signed in 2021.
