Yet Another Top Deal: Mets Secure Multi-Year Contract with World Series Champion Pitcher

Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler has emerged as one of the most coveted free agents on the market. The 30-year-old right-hander played a pivotal role in closing out the World Series against the Yankees last season and was considered one of baseball’s premier pitchers before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022.

The New York Mets are among several teams pursuing Buehler, but they face stiff competition. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, both the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants have also shown interest in the two-time All-Star. The Red Sox remain in the market for pitching help even after acquiring Garrett Crochet via trade, while the Giants are eyeing multiple pitching options, including fellow free agent Corbin Burnes.

The Yankees have also joined the race for Buehler. Their offseason spending spree already includes the record-breaking signing of left-handed pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million deal — the largest contract ever for a lefty pitcher and the fourth-largest for a pitcher overall.

With several teams in the mix, Buehler’s free agency is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched storylines of the offseason.
