The Miami Dolphins parted ways with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on Friday, ending his short stint with the team.
Beckham had missed the past two practice sessions for personal reasons, and Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel shared that the decision to release Beckham was mutual.
“Odell and I have been in constant communication since his arrival,” McDaniel explained. “He faced a challenging start due to having to rehab before the season, and we looked at what would be best for both him and the team moving forward. We concluded that it was the right time for this move. That was the reasoning behind it.”
Beckham signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in May but was placed on the physically unable to perform list at the beginning of the season after undergoing knee surgery in the offseason.
After making his debut in Week 5 against the New England Patriots, Beckham caught only nine passes for 55 yards over nine games.
Initially signed to be the third receiver behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Beckham never seemed to settle into a prominent role in the Dolphins’ offense. With rookie Malik Washington stepping up and tight end Jonnu Smith getting more opportunities, Beckham never became the third receiver.
Beckham gained fame in his first five NFL seasons with the New York Giants, then went on to play for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, and Los Angeles Rams. He won a Super Bowl with the Rams in the 2021-22 season.
Last season, Beckham recorded 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns with the Ravens before being released in March.
