The Phillies missed out on another trade opportunity when the Houston Astros sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs on Friday. The Cubs acquired Tucker in exchange for a package headlined by infielder Isaac Paredes, along with right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski and third-base prospect Cam Smith, according to The Athletic.
Friday dealt another blow to Philadelphia fans as the Cubs traded Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski, and Cam Smith to the Astros for outfielder Kyle Tucker. With the offseason dragging on, frustration is building, and Phillies fans are voicing their anger online.
MLB insider Jim Bowden reported that the Phillies made their own trade offer just hours before the Cubs’ deal, proposing a 2-for-1 package with Nick Castellanos and Alec Bohm for Kyle Tucker. However, the Astros turned it down, raising the question of why the Phillies couldn’t sweeten the deal.
The Cubs’ package—featuring 14th overall pick Cam Smith, pitcher Hayden Wesneski, and third baseman Isaac Paredes—might have been more appealing to the Astros, who are looking to add youth to their roster. While Bohm and Castellanos have value, especially offensively, their weaknesses, such as Bohm’s defensive struggles and Castellanos’ frequent swing-and-miss issues, likely made them less enticing. Despite having the depth in their farm system, the Phillies seem hesitant to fully commit to landing the right trade targets.
