Star Player gets his shot to reclaim the Browns’ QB throne!
The Cleveland Browns are facing a difficult situation with Deshaun Watson as they plan for the 2025 season. While his massive contract, which includes cap hits of roughly $73 million in each of the next two seasons, makes it financially unfeasible to part ways with him, the team also remains committed to giving Watson a chance to win back his starting quarterback job.
Despite his poor performance in 2024, Watson’s potential is still seen as a reason for optimism. The Browns believe that injuries to key offensive linemen and the team’s major offensive scheme overhaul contributed to his struggles. With a more stable offseason planned, they hope Watson can improve and start strong in 2025.
However, Cleveland is not putting all its faith in Watson. The team plans to bring in competition at quarterback to at least challenge Watson for the starting role. This could involve drafting a new quarterback, although no concrete decisions have been made yet. As of now, the Browns have not publicly committed to Watson as the 2025 starter, especially considering how poorly he performed before suffering his season-ending Achilles injury.
His struggles have been long-standing, with Watson averaging fewer than 200 passing yards per game during his entire Browns career, adding to the uncertainty about his future.
The Browns’ position reflects a blend of financial constraints and cautious optimism. They are aware of Watson’s substantial contract and how difficult it is to move him, but they are also mindful of his underperformance, which has made him unpopular among fans. While they hope he can return to his former level of play, there’s no certainty about whether Watson can regain the form that earned him a massive contract in the first place.
